Lami’s Mosque, also known as the New Mahala Mosque, is a significant symbol of the city of Ulcinj and its rich history. Founded in 1689 by Haji Ali, this mosque has witnessed numerous events over the centuries, including a devastating earthquake in 1979 that completely destroyed it. However, thanks to the efforts of the Islamic community and the citizens of Ulcinj, the mosque was restored and rebuilt atop its original foundations.
The architecture of Lami’s Mosque reflects a Mediterranean style, featuring an open covered entrance and an upstairs balcony, making it particularly suitable during the warm summer months. Additionally, the mosque is equipped with an abdesthana (an area intended for performing ritual washing before prayer) and a gasulhana (an area intended for performing ritual washing of the body before burial). It also has a space for performing funeral prayers, highlighting its importance in the religious and social life of the community.
A mosque is not only a place of prayer; it is also the center of the community, a place for gathering, learning, and spiritual development. As such, Lami’s Mosque stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the citizens of Ulcinj in preserving their cultural and religious heritage. Its restoration continues to serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the importance of preserving historical monuments for future generations.
