Bregu’s Mosque

Bregu’s Mosque stands as a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of its region. Built in 1783, the mosque was commissioned by a wealthy captain named Ahmet Gjyli from Ulqin. This mosque has been a landmark for belivers for more than two centuries. With a tall minaret, built of finely carved stone, it is an example of architecture from the Ottoman period that has survived through time.

The 1979 earthquake marked a difficult moment for the Bregu’s Mosque, damaging it significantly. However, the 1986 renovation brought a new spirit and ensured that this place of worship continued to serve as a community centre. The addition of the auxiliary facility to the mosque’s harem has expanded the prayer space, making it possible for over 300 worshipers to gather and practice their religious rites. At the same time, there is also a fountain for ablution in the harem of the mosque.

Next to the mosque is the grave of its builder, Kapedan Ahmet Gjyli

The Bregu’s Mosque not only provides a space for prayer, but is also a living testament to the community’s heritage and identity. Its renewal and expansion demonstrate dedication and respect for tradition while facing challenges. As a monument of faith and history, the Bregu’s Mosque remains a precious treasure for present and future generations.
